Too many job seekers sit on a couch and think that jobs will automatically fall into their laps. Wrong! As a job searcher, you need to open up all channels to generate maximum awareness.

With so many jobs in North America being unadvertised, ingenuity, patience, determination, and long hours are paramount to your success. In fact you might find yourself working harder during a job search than while gainfully employed.

Unfortunately, if you confine your efforts to just one area, your work may bring limited returns and that can be very discouraging as you navigate through the mine field of career transition.

For better results, combine these strategies to expand your job search horizons:

  • Get your name out there by fearlessly using social media for networking, and as a valuable platform to market yourself as a thought leader or subject matter expert.
  • Combine this with avid in-person networking both within your industry and outside your industry. This too can generate leads for you, providing you conduct your networking activities properly by giving before receiving. You can help advance somebody else’s career or business just as much as they can help you.
  • Consider a career change, which is a lot easier and more feasible in today’s strong economy. What is the best job for your strengths?
  • Don’t ignore the value that executive recruiters can bring to your job search. If you haven’t already, begin building and managing these valuable relationships. With prudent career management, the right recruiter can help advance your career for the rest of your life.

When you do return back to your couch (or you can even job search from your mobile device), use the internet to uncover jobs through LinkedIn, job boards, company websites, and aggregators such as Indeed and Eluta.

If you open your mind to all of these tools, you can expand your job search possibilities and outcome.
