It’s true: No matter what your profession, when you’re searching for a job, you’re in sales. Despite your expertise in finance, engineering, or IT, your primary job during the search process is selling yourself.
You have to be ready to explain why you are the number one candidate for the job you want, the number one fit for the organization you want to join. From your personal brand, to your resume, to your LinkedIn Profile, on through your elevator pitch and interviewing skills, you must sell yourself to hiring influencers.
Most people are uncomfortable blowing their own horn, explaining their virtues and skills. When you are seeking a job, that kind of positivity about yourself isn’t bragging, it’s sales. The better the sales pitch, the better your chances of landing that job.
If you frame every step you take in the job search, every decision you make about presenting yourself to HR professionals and recruiters, by asking “How does this sell me to my next employer?” you’ll be off to a great start in your search!
December is a great month to look for a job, so don’t slow down or undersell your fit for the position you want. Sell yourself with enthusiasm and confidence to every hiring influencer you contact during your search!
